Artificial intelligence is beginning to contribute to fee income growth at DBS, with early benefits showing up across wealth management and corporate banking. CEO Tan Su Shan told CNA the technology is helping relationship managers generate ideas for clients and lift transaction activity — the first signs that years of AI investment are showing up on the revenue side of the ledger.

Tan spoke after DBS reported a record second-quarter net profit and raised its 2026 guidance. She described the early gains as "green shoots" of AI-driven ideation that generates fees, with the bank's tools also nudging customers toward action and creating what she calls a fee-income flywheel. DBS has been embedding AI across customer service, risk management and software engineering for several years, and said earlier this year that its AI and data analytics initiatives generated about S$1 billion in economic value in 2025.

The significance here is the shift from cost savings to revenue. Most banks talk about AI in terms of efficiency; DBS is now pointing to concrete fee income tied to AI-generated client interactions. If that holds, it strengthens the case for sustained AI investment across Singapore's financial sector, where budgets still face scrutiny against compliance and risk priorities.

Singapore's banking heavyweights are effectively running a live experiment in AI monetisation, and DBS is the clearest data point yet. Digital banks, insurers and wealth managers across the city-state are watching how quickly AI-assisted advisory translates into measurable income before committing deeper.

Why it matters for Singapore: For Singapore's AI community, DBS's experience shows what returns on AI investment can look like in a regulated, mature financial hub. The city-state's Smart Nation ambitions depend on enterprises converting AI capability into business outcomes, not just pilots. As Southeast Asia's largest bank, DBS sets the benchmark for whether AI becomes a genuine growth engine for Singapore Inc.
