Singapore's SMEs are adopting AI at a fraction of the rate of large firms — a gap Parliament was told this week stands at 76% versus 27% — and DBS is betting that the missing ingredient is not just funding, but hand-holding. The bank's new "DBS for SMEs" initiative bundles advisory services, capability-building and financing into a single programme aimed at businesses that know they should automate but don't know where to start.

The launch, announced on August 6, gives new clients access to onboarding workshops and one-on-one advisory sessions, with sector-focused tracks covering healthcare, building and construction, industrials, and chemicals and materials. There are also programmes for second-generation business owners on leadership succession, digital transformation and peer networking, alongside existing DBS BusinessClass initiatives such as Spark Gen AI and ESG Ready. Sharon Tan, Head of SME Banking at DBS Singapore, said the programme reflects the bank's push to "convene its ecosystem of partners and capabilities" to help small businesses navigate uncertainty.

On the financing side, DBS is widening access to project loans for capital-intensive work such as construction, and enhancing working capital loans through the Enterprise Financing Scheme with Enterprise Singapore. For cross-border trade, SMEs can already pay 190 countries in 132 currencies, while SecureFX lets them lock in exchange rates in advance without a credit line. The initiative follows the government's S$900 million business support package, and will feature in a National Day campaign spotlighting local entrepreneurs.

The significance here is the packaging. Financing for SMEs has never been scarce; advice on how to deploy AI productively has been. By attaching structured AI adoption support — workshops, sector playbooks, succession planning — to its lending relationships, DBS is positioning itself as the on-ramp for the SME segment that surveys consistently show is the slowest to move.

Why it matters for Singapore: SMEs make up 99% of enterprises here, and the gap between their AI uptake and that of large firms is one of the clearest drags on the national productivity story. A bank-led programme that pairs EnterpriseSG-backed financing with structured capability-building attacks that gap from both sides — and signals that AI adoption for smaller firms is shifting from "should we?" to "show us how."
