The entry-level pipeline that used to launch software careers in Singapore is being compressed, and fresh tech graduates feel it. A YouthTechSG survey of 246 tertiary students found 83.3 per cent want help with technical skills development and problem-solving — the strongest demand signal in the study — as employers shift from hiring for coding proficiency to hiring for the ability to solve business problems and ship real products.

CNA's report, which draws on recruiters and industry bodies, shows what that shift looks like in practice. "Vibe coding" — using AI to generate code from natural-language prompts instead of writing it line by line — is now common enough that developers are expected to orchestrate agents rather than type out functions. But employers are also tightening the door: Michael Page's Neo Miao Xia says companies are returning to live coding assignments without AI assistants during interviews, wanting proof that graduates can do the job themselves.

Students are responding in ways that hint at the anxiety underneath. Some are stacking multiple internships and extra credentials, occasionally skipping lectures to do so, worried that what they learn in school will be outdated by graduation. YouthTechSG vice-president Lam Yik Ting argues universities cannot close the skills gap alone — industry needs to provide internships and mentorship that build on academic foundations.

The Singapore Computer Society's position is that fundamentals still matter: universities should strengthen computer science basics while embedding AI across the curriculum, and give students more chances to work on industry projects and cross-disciplinary problems. The message is that adaptability and critical thinking, not tool fluency, will separate graduates in an AI-driven job market.

Why it matters for Singapore: This is the demand side of the country's AI workforce story — the same week MTI data showed early AI adoption is growing jobs, graduates are being told the entry bar has moved. Singapore's bet on AI as a growth engine depends on a pipeline of talent that can work with agents, not just alongside them. How universities, employers and students adjust over the next two years will determine whether the AI economy here has the human base to match its infrastructure ambitions.
