Indonesia and Singapore Renew Education Partnership With AI and Digital Learning at the Core

Indonesia and Singapore are deepening their education cooperation with a renewed focus on artificial intelligence, digital learning, and educator development, updating a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding first signed in 2017. The timing is deliberate — both countries are preparing to mark 60 years of diplomatic relations in 2027, and the refreshed agreement reflects how much the education technology landscape has shifted in the nine years since the original pact.

During a meeting in Singapore, Indonesian Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu'ti and Singaporean Minister for Education Desmond Lee agreed to expand collaboration in AI, education technology, and skills development. Minister Mu'ti highlighted the scale of Indonesia's challenge — providing quality education across an archipelago of more than 50 million students, many in remote communities — and positioned AI-enabled distance learning as a tool to bridge gaps in access. He emphasised that technology should complement, not replace, critical thinking and human judgment in the classroom.

Minister Lee noted that the renewed framework needed to account for the rapid advances in generative AI and education technology since 2017. The updated MoU covers not just curriculum and pedagogy but also the competencies teachers themselves need in an AI-influenced classroom. Both sides discussed strengthening professional development for Indonesian educators and migrant workers, and Minister Mu'ti invited collaboration with Temasek and Singapore-based companies operating in Indonesia to support education initiatives, particularly in Sumatra.

The future of the Indonesian School of Singapore, whose current site lease expires in April 2027, was also on the agenda. The school serves the children of Indonesian diplomats and professionals based in Singapore, and its continuation is seen as a practical symbol of the bilateral education relationship.

Why it matters for Singapore: This partnership positions Singapore's education technology ecosystem as a regional hub for AI-enabled learning, creating export opportunities for local edtech companies and research collaborations between Singapore and Indonesian institutions. For Singapore's AI sector, the MoU signals growing regional demand for AI literacy programmes, digital learning platforms, and teacher training tools — areas where Singapore-based startups and edtech providers have a natural first-mover advantage in Southeast Asia.
