Mastercard has launched Mastercard AI Agent Commerce, enabling businesses to deploy AI agents for automated payments, procurement, and financial operations on its global payment network.

The API-based service lets businesses create, manage, and audit AI agents that initiate and approve payments within defined controls. It responds to projections that billions of AI agent-to-agent transactions will occur annually within five years.

The solution adds verification and fraud detection ensuring AI agents operate within authorised boundaries — spending limits, approved counterparties, transaction type restrictions. Every AI-initiated payment maintains a full audit trail for compliance.

A major payment network entering AI agent commerce validates that autonomous transactions are approaching mainstream. For Singapore's financial sector, this infrastructure will be available through existing banking relationships.

Why it matters for Singapore: Singapore's banks and fintechs will be among the first to offer Mastercard's AI agent commerce capabilities. For local enterprises already using AI agents, this removes a key friction: the ability to pay and get paid autonomously.
