NVIDIA is planting its flag in Singapore's AI research landscape. At ATxSummit 2026, the chipmaker announced plans to open its first research laboratory in the city-state, focused on advancing embodied AI — the field that gives physical form to artificial intelligence through robots, autonomous vehicles, and drones.

The lab, NVIDIA's second research presence in the Asia-Pacific region, will work alongside university researchers, industry partners, and government agencies. It represents a strategic bet that embodied AI — which requires tight integration of hardware, software, and real-world testing — is the next major frontier after language models.

Alongside the NVIDIA announcement, IMDA unveiled plans for Singapore's first large-scale physical AI testbed at Punggol Digital District. The initiative, led jointly with JTC and the Singapore Institute of Technology, will allow companies to test robotics and embodied AI systems in a mixed-use public environment — a rarity in the global AI testbed landscape.

Initial participants include Certis, DHL, Grab, and QuikBot, who will trial robotics services for food and parcel delivery, cleaning, and security patrolling alongside existing human operations. The programme is facilitated with support from the Land Transport Authority under an exemption framework within the Active Mobility Act.

The combination of NVIDIA's research lab and the Punggol testbed creates a feedback loop: research informs testing, testing generates real-world data, and data feeds back into improved models. It's exactly the kind of applied AI ecosystem that Singapore has been trying to build.

Why it matters for Singapore: Embodied AI is where the physical economy meets artificial intelligence, and Singapore's density, regulatory sophistication, and built environment make it an ideal testbed. The NVIDIA lab gives the city-state direct access to cutting-edge chip research while the Punggol testbed offers something few places can: a real neighbourhood for robots to learn in.
