OpenAI has opened applications for Founder Day Singapore, a half-day event on June 22 aimed at startup founders, developers, and builders across Southeast Asia. The application-only gathering is designed as an implementation-focused deep dive rather than a general AI overview, signalling OpenAI's growing commitment to engaging the region's startup ecosystem directly.

Singapore has become OpenAI's regional hub since the company launched its Singapore office and multi-year partnership with the government last year. The Founder Day format, which OpenAI has run in other global tech hubs, brings together product teams, applied AI leads, and startup founders for hands-on workshops rather than marketing presentations. This edition features technical workshops on agentic workflows, OpenAI Codex integration, and building multilingual user experiences — topics specifically chosen for the Southeast Asian market.

The event runs from 2:00 PM to 6:30 PM SGT and includes product updates, live demonstrations, an ask-me-anything session with the OpenAI team, and startup showcases. Key speakers include Teri Yu from OpenAI's multimodal API product team, Thomas Jeng who heads startups for Asia-Pacific, and Wulfie Bain, OpenAI's applied AI lead for startups internationally. Attendance is strictly application-based with limited capacity, and the agenda prioritises practical implementation guidance over high-level trend talks.

OpenAI's deeper engagement with Singapore's startup community comes amid intensifying competition from Anthropic, which has also been courting Singapore-based developers. The Founder Day follows OpenAI's earlier establishment of a Builder Lounge in Singapore and positions the city-state as a key beachhead for the company's Southeast Asian expansion strategy.

Why it matters for Singapore: OpenAI choosing Singapore as the venue for its regional Founder Day — rather than Tokyo, Bangalore, or Jakarta — reinforces the city-state's status as Southeast Asia's AI hub. For Singapore-based startups, direct access to OpenAI's product and applied AI teams means earlier insight into platform changes and better positioning to build on frontier models. The focus on multilingual and agentic workflows also aligns well with Singapore's regional business focus.
