Singapore's gaming giant Razer is betting that the next big leap in games won't be sharper graphics or faster refresh rates, but software that thinks. On Aug 5, Razer and NUS's School of Computing announced the Razer-NUS Joint AI Research Lab, a dedicated facility that will explore how AI models purpose-built for interactive entertainment can make games respond to players in real time.

The lab's first order of business is defining a new research domain the partners are calling Gaming Artificial Narrow Intelligence, or GANI. The idea is an AI teammate that reads your playstyle and adjusts tactics on the fly, generates objectives and dialogue that fit the context of a match, and tunes difficulty live so the game stays challenging without becoming frustrating. The work sits on top of Razer's existing AI ambitions, including AVA, its planned digital human companion, and Project Motoko, a wearable AI headset in development.

The economics explain the urgency. Research cited by the partners projects the AI-in-gaming market growing from US$4.2 billion in 2025 to US$66.8 billion by 2035, a 32% compound annual growth rate, while a survey found 79% of gamers open to at least one AI-enabled feature. Razer already runs an AI Center of Excellence in Singapore employing more than 100 engineers, data scientists and researchers, and the new lab gives NUS academics a direct line into a live commercial engineering environment.

Under the arrangement, NUS Computing leads research and talent development while Razer validates use cases and integrates findings into its products. The lab is housed within NUS, and while proprietary results feed Razer's ecosystem, findings intended for the wider community will be published through open research channels — a structure that mirrors the industry-university collaborations Singapore has been deliberately cultivating around AI.

Why it matters for Singapore: This is the kind of anchor partnership the National AI Strategy wants more of: a Singapore-listed company co-funding foundational research with a local university, keeping both the talent and the intellectual property in-country. For NUS Computing, it deepens an already strong AI research portfolio with a commercial testbed; for Razer, it is a hedge on a market projected to grow more than tenfold in a decade. Watch for the lab's first published findings — and whether GANI-style agents start showing up in shipped games.
