Singapore-based tech giant Sea Limited has announced a major expansion of its strategic partnership with OpenAI, embedding Shopee directly into ChatGPT and rolling out enterprise-grade AI tools for small businesses across eight markets.

The deal marks one of the most ambitious integrations of generative AI into a Southeast Asian e-commerce ecosystem to date, spanning Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Brazil.
Consumers can now search Shopee's real-time inventory through conversational prompts in ChatGPT — asking for niche travel gear, curated fashion inspiration, or complex gift lists — and receive intelligent product suggestions sourced directly from the platform. This makes Shopee the first e-commerce operator across Southeast Asia and Latin America to deploy a native shopping integration inside ChatGPT. The longer-term roadmap includes OpenAI's Operator framework, which could eventually execute end-to-end shopping tasks autonomously on behalf of users.
Beyond consumer search, the partnership introduces ChatGPT for Business tools tailored specifically for Shopee's SME sellers. Eligible merchants gain access to automated product description generation, multi-language translation and localization, marketing copy creation, and responsive customer service models — capabilities that have traditionally been available only to large multinational brands. Sea is also rolling out ChatGPT Enterprise accounts internally across its engineering and content teams, alongside a regional Codex hackathon series kicking off in Singapore.
Why it matters for Singapore: Sea Limited is Singapore's most valuable publicly listed company, and this partnership cements the city-state's role as the strategic hub for OpenAI's expansion into Southeast Asia. The SME tools are particularly significant for Singapore's 200,000-plus small and medium enterprises, many of which are still in the early stages of AI adoption. By embedding generative AI into the daily operations of Shopee's merchant network, Sea and OpenAI are effectively building the region's largest practical classroom for AI-powered commerce — and Singapore sits at its centre.
