Singapore-based AI data startup Clairva has raised US$500,000 in pre-seed funding to expand its licensed dataset operations across the Global South. The round was led by Venture Catalysts' angel network, with participation from Suraj Nalin, Durgesh Kaushik, and other strategic investors across Southeast Asia and India.

Clairva sources, licenses, and structures real-world data from India, Southeast Asia, and the wider Global South to train AI foundation models, robotics systems, and world-model developers. The company works with content owners, production houses, studios, archives, and contributor networks to build datasets with full provenance tracking. It is also developing proprietary technology for dataset ingestion, rights management, automated enrichment, and quality validation.

The company's pitch addresses a real gap: AI models trained predominantly on Western data perform poorly on Global South contexts. Clairva aims to close that gap with licensed, high-quality data that captures how people, objects, and spaces behave in the physical world across currently underrepresented regions. The startup plans to raise a US$5 million seed round later this year to deepen its data operations and expand commercial engagements with global AI customers.

Why it matters for Singapore: Clairva is part of a growing wave of Singapore-based AI infrastructure startups targeting data gaps in global model training. As the AI industry confronts the limits of web-scraped training data, companies that can provide licensed, provenance-backed datasets from underrepresented regions are becoming strategically important. Singapore's position as a regional hub with deep connections to Southeast Asia and India makes it a natural base for this kind of data infrastructure play.
