Singapore Business Review reports that logistics firms across the island are deploying AI-powered fleet management systems that track vehicles in real time, optimise delivery routes, monitor driver behaviour, and predict maintenance needs before breakdowns happen. The goal is straightforward — get more output from the same number of vehicles rather than adding to the fleet, which in Singapore's cost environment is often financially punishing.
The technology is being adopted by operators of all sizes. Cartrack Technologies Asia CEO Roger Calisto notes that connected vehicle systems help fleet managers identify underused assets and reroute them dynamically, while the National University of Singapore's Logistics Institute points to AI-driven route planning and historical data analysis as the biggest near-term opportunities. Driver safety cameras that detect fatigue and mobile phone use are layered on top, reducing accident risk alongside operational gains.
Implementation costs remain a hurdle for smaller players, and NUS Business School's Mark Goh observes that many small and medium operators lack the scale to test AI systems across multiple fleets. But the bigger barrier, according to Calisto, is mindset rather than budget — a reluctance to adopt new technology that could make the difference between surviving the cost squeeze and falling behind. Singapore University of Social Sciences' Sugoutam Ghosh adds that firms should measure success by utilisation rates, on-time deliveries, and cost per delivery rather than raw fleet size — metrics that AI makes far easier to track.

The firms that embrace the shift now aren't just protecting their own margins; they're building the operational muscle that will keep Singapore competitive as a regional trade hub. With autonomous vehicle trials already underway in Punggol and government transition packages preparing drivers for a tech-enabled future, the direction of travel is clear.
