A Singaporean man going by the pseudonym Luke has filed a police report after discovering that a former schoolmate used AI-generated and doctored images to fabricate an elaborate false narrative of a romantic relationship, including fake pregnancy photos and pictures of the pair as a couple holding a baby. The harassment, which began in December 2025, extended to using real photographs of Luke's young niece and nephew without consent, and impersonating Luke on social media platforms since 2017.

The case came to light when Luke's sister posted about the harassment on Threads on June 7, where it gained over 12,000 likes. Multiple people subsequently came forward revealing that the alleged perpetrator, identified as Siti, had been posing as Luke on various platforms for years. Speaking to The Straits Times, Luke said he had spoken 'no more than two sentences' to Siti during their school days. The fabricated images included AI manipulations where the original photo showed Luke in a black shirt posing with a cake, while the edited version placed him in a blue long-sleeved shirt holding a child, with distorted chair patterns in the background revealing the AI manipulation.

Clinical psychologist Carol Balhetchet said the perpetrator displayed signs of delusional thinking and a profound desire for control, recommending immediate psychological intervention. Legal expert Kevin Liew from Gloria James-Civetta and Co noted that Singapore's Protection from Harassment Act applies to AI-generated harassment, adding that it does not require proving the offender intended to harass — only that the conduct is likely to cause harassment, alarm, or distress. The family has since changed all social media accounts to private. Luke reported suffering from insomnia and an inability to concentrate at work.

Why it matters for Singapore: This incident underscores a troubling new frontier in online harassment where generative AI tools are weaponised for creative psychological warfare. As deepfake technology becomes more accessible, Singapore's legal framework — particularly the POHA — offers a relatively low evidentiary bar for victims, but the emotional toll remains severe. The case also raises questions about platform responsibility and the need for clearer guidelines around AI-generated content used in harassment, an issue that will only grow as generative AI tools become more sophisticated and widely available.
