The US government has removed foreign access restrictions on Anthropic’s Fable 5 AI model, clearing it for wider global distribution after the company resolved safety concerns raised by the Trump administration. Singapore-based developers and enterprises using Anthropic’s models regain full access to the frontier AI system.

The US Commerce Department has lifted export restrictions on Anthropic PBC’s Fable 5 large language model, allowing the frontier AI system to be distributed internationally once again. The restrictions, imposed in mid-June following the discovery of a jailbreak exploit that exposed security weaknesses, had forced Anthropic to block global access to both Fable 5 and its larger counterpart Mythos 5.

Anthropic announced on X that it received official notification from the Commerce Department that the curbs were being removed. The company had committed to intelligence sharing and providing early government access to new models as part of the resolution process. The restrictions were originally triggered after Fable 5 demonstrated potential improvements in cyber attack capabilities during testing, leading the US government to classify it under export control regulations.

The lifting of restrictions has immediate implications for Singapore’s AI developer community. Anthropic maintains a significant presence in Singapore, including an office and ongoing hiring for research and engineering roles. Local enterprises and startups building on Anthropic’s API ecosystem can now deploy Fable 5-powered applications without regulatory ambiguity, while Singapore-based researchers regain access to one of the most capable publicly available AI models for evaluation and experimentation.

The decision comes amid a broader recalibration of US AI export policy. While the Biden-era framework restricted advanced AI model distribution to prevent misuse, the Trump administration appears to be taking a case-by-case approach, balancing national security concerns against the competitive position of American AI companies in global markets. Anthropic has also reinstated access to Mythos 5, the larger model in the Fable series, under the same lifted restrictions.

Why it matters for Singapore: As a major hub for AI research and development in Asia, Singapore benefits directly from restored access to frontier AI models. Anthropic’s Singapore office positions the city-state as a key node in the company’s global operations, and the resolution of this export control episode removes a source of uncertainty for the local AI ecosystem that depends on access to cutting-edge foundation models.
