The shift is straightforward: AI tools now handle large chunks of routine coding that used to serve as proving grounds for junior developers. Employers are responding by valuing real-world application, independence and soft skills alongside coding fundamentals — the qualities that AI cannot yet replicate reliably. That recalibration is hitting students just as they finish their degrees, and many are signalling that their coursework alone has not prepared them for it.

Universities and industry are being urged to close the gap with more practical experience: internships, project-based learning and hands-on exposure to AI-assisted workflows.
