AI coding startup Cursor is planting a flag in Singapore, establishing a new Asia-Pacific headquarters to serve a region where AI software adoption is accelerating faster than anywhere else in the world. The company's president Simon Green cited Singapore's forward-leaning policy environment, strong enterprise demand, and strategic position as the deciding factors for the hub's location.

Cursor's expansion comes at a moment when AI adoption in software development has reached mainstream status in roughly three years — a timeline that makes SaaS (15 years) and public cloud (10 years) look glacial by comparison. Despite widespread enthusiasm, Green noted that few government or enterprise leaders believe their organisations are moving fast enough. The conversation has already shifted from hype to cost controls, security, and managing token burn rates as teams move beyond basic AI-assisted coding toward agent-assisted development workflows.

The new Singapore hub will serve customers across a vast region stretching from Japan to Australia and India to the Far East. Cursor already counts hundreds of regional clients, including some in Singapore, but has been servicing them remotely without a local team. The company plans to hire for engineering, go-to-market, marketing, legal, and HR roles locally, supplementing with international talent and partnering with local universities. The critical challenge: building capability fast enough to match the staggering enterprise adoption curve.

Why it matters for Singapore: Cursor's decision validates Singapore's bet on becoming Asia's AI hub. The city-state's combination of pro-innovation regulation, deep enterprise demand, and gateway access to regional markets makes it a natural landing spot for AI-first companies expanding into APAC. For Singapore's tech workforce, it means high-value AI engineering and go-to-market roles — exactly the kind of jobs the National AI Strategy aims to attract.
