A new government-backed initiative aims to accelerate artificial intelligence adoption across Singapore's food and beverage sector, which has lagged behind other industries in embracing digital tools. The F&B AI and Digital Integration Programme, launched jointly by EnterpriseSG and UOB on Wednesday, offers participating businesses advisory support and funding coverage of up to 50% for AI-enabled solutions and digital integration services.

Announced by Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry Low Yen Ling during her opening address at Restaurant Asia 2026, the programme comes with an initial panel of three solution providers — OpenMinds, PayBoy, and VisionTech — offering services ranging from business systems integration and workflow automation to AI assistants and customer engagement tools. More providers are expected to be added over time as the programme scales. A UOB survey found that while many F&B operators have digitised with online ordering and inventory systems, six in ten still operate these as standalone tools, limiting their value.

The timing reflects a broader push as Singapore's F&B sector faces rising cost pressures and a challenging operating environment. Low noted that AI presents significant opportunities for demand forecasting, staff optimisation, inventory management, and customer personalisation. The survey also revealed that about one in three F&B operators have yet to adopt any AI tools, though 80% expressed interest in solutions that improve operational efficiency, and 70% are keen on tools to acquire new customers and strengthen loyalty.

"For many F&B enterprises, the hardest challenge may not be finding the many AI solutions out there, but in knowing which ones are right for their business and how to begin in a practical and sustainable way," Low said. The programme addresses this directly through UOB's SME Banking advisory arm, which helps business owners identify AI solutions matched to their specific operational needs before applying for EnterpriseSG funding support.

Why it matters for Singapore: The F&B sector employs over 200,000 workers and is a cornerstone of Singapore's economy and identity, but its SME-heavy composition has made AI adoption slower than in finance and tech. This programme signals that the government views AI accessibility for small businesses as a national priority — not just for large corporations. By combining advisory support with direct funding, EnterpriseSG and UOB are tackling the twin barriers of knowledge and cost that typically hold back smaller F&B operators from digital transformation. If successful, this model could be replicated across other traditional sectors where AI adoption remains uneven.
