Singapore's universities have spent years racing to weave generative AI into the classroom, but the harder problem has always been the very first step of any serious research project: figuring out what to read. That is the gap NUS is now attacking with a homegrown conversational platform called AI Sense Maker, which the university bills as the first tool of its kind in Southeast Asia for student and academic research.

AI Sense Maker, built by NUS Libraries and NUS IT, draws on more than 150,000 digitised materials from the university's ScholarBank repository and its Digital Gems special collection. Instead of a simple keyword search, it pairs an OpenAI large language model with semantic search to understand the intent behind a query, surface relevant sources even when they use different terminology, and return answers with numbered citations linked back to the underlying material. It can also generate concept summaries and interactive knowledge graphs that map how ideas across the corpus connect. First showcased in July, the tool goes live on 20 August and will be available to NUS students and faculty.

The launch is deliberate positioning rather than a one-off experiment. AI Sense Maker sits inside NUS's broader 'Library of Fantastic Things' framework, which explores how technology can reshape student learning. For a university whose reputation rests heavily on research output, a platform that collapses the hours spent trawling databases like JSTOR and ScienceDirect into a guided afternoon has obvious appeal. But NUS is also inserting itself directly into the broader debate over how much of academic work should be automated, drawing a careful line by pitching the tool as a head start — a way to identify and understand sources — rather than a replacement for the reading, synthesis and writing that define scholarship.

For students and early-career researchers, the implications are practical: faster literature discovery, fewer blind spots in the search for related work, and a clearer path to formulating a research question. Yet because the platform answers through an OpenAI model filtered through NUS's own institutional corpus, it also showcases a distinctly Singaporean model of deploying AI — grounding a general-purpose model in a curated, trusted knowledge base so its output stays anchored and verifiable.

Why it matters for Singapore: AI Sense Maker gives Singapore's flagship university a tangible answer to critics who argue AI erodes academic rigour — here, the same technology is being used to deepen it by making quality sources easier to find and cite. With NUS positioning itself as a first-mover in Southeast Asia, the platform doubles as a demonstration that local institutions can build serious research infrastructure on top of frontier models, which could shape how universities across the region approach AI adoption in the years ahead.
