Chinese autonomous driving company Pony.ai has opened its robotaxi service to the general public in Singapore Punggol district, moving beyond an invitation-only pilot to a fully bookable consumer offering through ComfortDelGro Zig app. The service went live on June 22, marking a significant milestone in Singapore autonomous vehicle deployment timeline and giving residents a real-world look at AI-driven mobility beyond the testing track.

The robotaxis operate along a route connecting Punggol residential areas with Punggol Coast Mall, Punggol Coast MRT station, One Punggol, Oasis Terrace, and Punggol Plaza. Pony.ai is targeting more than 3,500 robotaxis globally across 20 cities by end of 2026, with Singapore serving as a key beachhead for its international expansion beyond China. ComfortDelGro Managing Director and Group CEO Cheng Siak Kian said the company is moving from pilot to operational mode, integrating autonomous vehicle technology alongside its traditional fleet.

Pony.ai first entered Singapore in September 2025 through a partnership with ComfortDelGro. The transition from testing to public access in under a year signals that both the technology and the regulatory framework are maturing faster than many analysts predicted. For Singapore, it adds a second autonomous transport option alongside the driverless shuttle that launched in the same week, creating a broader ecosystem of AV services.

Why it matters for Singapore: Public robotaxi availability transforms autonomous mobility from a novelty into a mainstream option. Singapore has consistently positioned itself as a testbed for smart mobility solutions, and operational robotaxis in a residential heartland like Punggol demonstrate that the city-state can move from regulatory sandbox to real-world deployment faster than most markets. A Chinese AV firm choosing Singapore for its first public consumer-facing service outside China underscores the city reputation as a trusted launchpad for emerging transport AI.
