There's a number worth sitting up for: Singapore is now the 4th best startup ecosystem in the world, according to StartupBlink's Global Startup Ecosystem Index 2026. That puts the city-state firmly in the top five globally for the first time, leading the entire Asia Pacific region. The ranking — up from 16th just five years ago — reflects how aggressively Singapore has built the conditions for tech entrepreneurship to thrive.

StartupBlink's index ranks Singapore 4th out of 125 countries, with an annual ecosystem growth rate of 24.4% — the highest among the top 10 and well above both the global average of 17.5% and the Asia-Pacific average of 21.2%. The ecosystem is valued at US$292.1 billion (S$376.8 billion) and is home to 19 unicorns. By category, Singapore leads the world in Startup Community Activity, ranks 2nd globally in Fintech (behind only the United States), and 2nd in Ecommerce & Retail. It also scored 3rd in Ecosystem Brand Value and 3rd in Ecosystem Visibility.

This trajectory is significant because it tracks Singapore's deliberate strategy of positioning itself as Asia's tech gateway. The jump from 16th to 4th in half a decade coincides with sustained government investment through bodies like EnterpriseSG, SGInnovate, and EDB, which have channelled capital and incentives into deep-tech and AI startups. The growth also reflects strong venture capital activity — sovereign wealth funds GIC and Temasek have been among the most active AI investors globally, backing companies from Anthropic to OpenAI and directing capital toward local startups through co-investment vehicles.

On the city level, Singapore entered the global top 10 for the first time, rising two places to 10th with 26.7% growth — the highest rate among all top-10 cities and a score of 78.854. Six of the Asia-Pacific region's top 10 economies posted more than 20% growth, underscoring that the startup boom is a regional phenomenon, not just a Singapore story. But Singapore is the clear leader, nearly doubling second-place Australia's regional score.

Why it matters for Singapore: The ranking validates what's been happening on the ground — founders choosing Singapore as their base, global VCs setting up regional hubs here, and a regulatory environment that actively courts innovation. For the AI ecosystem specifically, Singapore's 2nd-place global fintech ranking signals something important: the intersection of finance and AI, where Singapore has long held an edge through MAS' regulatory sandboxes and the sheer density of banking and insurance headquarters, continues to be a powerful moat. The challenge now is maintaining this growth trajectory as other Asian hubs invest heavily to catch up.
