As artificial intelligence moves deeper into factory floors and production lines, the question of who is responsible when an AI system makes a costly mistake becomes harder to answer. Singapore Polytechnic (SP) is stepping in with a practical answer — a governance framework designed specifically for industrial AI, paired with training programmes that help companies build risk-management muscle before problems arise.

SP has become the founding training partner for AutomationSG's Trusted Industrial AI-Ready Framework (TIA-Ready), which gives businesses a structured way to assess AI risks, assign accountability, and put safeguards in place. The framework lets companies start small — a single use case like machine vision inspection or predictive maintenance — and expand AI governance incrementally rather than attempting full enterprise-wide controls from day one. This staged approach is intentional: it makes AI governance manageable for small and medium enterprises that may not have dedicated compliance teams.

SP will translate the framework into hands-on training for workers, students, and industry partners. It is also launching an Industrial AI and Governance Literacy programme in October 2026 aimed at graduates, adult learners, and companies looking to upskill their workforce. "As AI becomes embedded in industrial and operational environments, companies need both the right technology and the workforce capabilities to use it responsibly," said SP Principal and CEO Soh Wai Wah.

The timing reflects a growing recognition that industrial AI carries distinct risks that office-based AI deployments do not. A factory AI managing predictive maintenance or quality control operates in a safety-critical environment where a misdiagnosis can halt production lines or damage equipment. Data leakage from proprietary manufacturing processes is another concern, and without clear governance protocols, the line between useful automation and operational liability blurs quickly.

Why it matters for Singapore: Manufacturing contributes roughly 21 per cent of Singapore's GDP, and the sector is under pressure to adopt AI-driven efficiency without creating new operational vulnerabilities. TIA-Ready gives small and mid-sized manufacturers a realistic on-ramp to AI governance — one that does not assume they have the compliance headcount of a multinational. For Singapore's broader AI push, this is the kind of ground-level infrastructure that determines whether the national AI strategy translates into safe, scalable adoption or gets stuck on pilot projects that never reach production.
