Singapore's workplace safety ecosystem is about to get an AI upgrade — one that lets safety officers snap a photo and instantly identify hazards, rather than paging through stacks of regulatory documents. The Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Council has unveiled the Safety Advisory and Guidance Engine (SAGE), an AI-powered platform that promises to fundamentally change how safety assessments are conducted across the country's construction sites, factories, and industrial facilities.
Announced by Minister of State for Manpower Dinesh Vasu Dash at the Singapore Workplace Safety and Health Conference 2026, SAGE uses computer vision and natural language processing to analyse site photographs and flag common safety risks. The platform draws on approximately 1,800 curated documents — including the Workplace Safety and Health Act, approved codes of practice, official advisories, and industry guidance — to recommend appropriate controls for each identified hazard. Beta testing is scheduled to begin in August 2026, with a full public launch planned for January 2027.
SAGE is being developed jointly by the WSH Council and the Singapore Institution of Safety Officers, with input from the Ministry of National Development's built environment productivity task force. What distinguishes it from a standard search tool is its photo-analysis capability: a practitioner can upload an image from a worksite, and the platform will identify risks, draw lessons from similar scenarios, and surface relevant safety measures — all without the user needing to construct complex AI prompts. The platform will operate in seven languages — English, Malay, Mandarin, Tamil, Bengali, Hindi, and Burmese — widening access to safety information across Singapore's multilingual workforce, including migrant workers.
The launch comes at a time when workplace safety technology is becoming a growing subsector of Singapore's AI ecosystem. Beyond SAGE, the government also announced the Alliance for Action on Safety and Health for Employment Longevity (AfA-SHEL), which will bring together employers, unions, and industry groups to redesign jobs for an ageing workforce, with shortlisted proposals eligible for prototyping funding. A new WSH Council WhatsApp channel will distribute safety alerts and guidance directly to workers and employers.
Why it matters for Singapore: SAGE represents one of the most practical applications of AI in the occupational safety space seen in the region. For a city-state where construction and manufacturing remain significant employers, a tool that reduces the time safety teams spend navigating fragmented regulatory sources could meaningfully improve compliance consistency. The seven-language support also addresses a long-standing challenge in communicating safety information to migrant workers — an issue that has gained urgency as Singapore pushes toward higher safety standards across all sectors. If SAGE delivers on its August beta promise, it could become a template for AI-assisted regulatory compliance in other domains.
