HSBC is setting up its first global AI centre of excellence in Singapore, hiring more than 100 AI specialists across natural language processing, data science, and AI governance. The bank is also adding 100 wealth relationship manager roles over two years.

Financial institutions around the world have been talking about AI transformation for years, but the gap between announcement and execution has often been wide. HSBC's move today changes that calculus for Singapore. The bank is setting up its first global AI centre of excellence in Singapore and hiring more than 100 AI specialists — a concrete signal that Singapore's bid to become an AI hub is translating into real, high-value job creation in the financial sector.
The HSBC AI centre of excellence, launching later this year, will work across wealth management and global payments. In wealth, the focus is on AI-enabled portfolio builders and personalised wealth journeys. In payments, the bank plans agentic solutions for corporate treasurers and AI-powered e-commerce payments. The tools built in Singapore are intended to scale across HSBC's entire global network — meaning the work done here will influence how the bank operates worldwide.
HSBC is also adding 100 relationship manager roles across premier and private banking in Singapore over two years, targeting affluent and ultra-high-net-worth clients. The bank has over 3,600 employees in Singapore already. CEO Georges Elhedery described Singapore as playing "a fundamental role in our growth and leadership position in Asia," while Singapore CEO Wong Kee Joo linked the expansion directly to the Economic Strategy Review's vision of Singapore as a focal point for AI, trade, and investment.
The specialist roles span natural language processing, data science, AI governance, and human-centred design. HSBC will also hire AI-fluent business specialists — people who understand both the technology and how to apply it to banking problems. The bank is partnering with Singapore's universities and government bodies to build a talent pipeline, including training and deploying fresh graduates alongside experienced hires.
Why it matters for Singapore: This is the kind of anchor investment Singapore's AI ecosystem needs. A global bank choosing Singapore for its first AI centre of excellence validates the country's talent pool, regulatory environment, and digital infrastructure. Beyond the 200 direct hires, the centre will train local talent in cutting-edge AI applications for finance, creating a multiplier effect for the broader fintech and AI community. For a city-state competing with Hong Kong and Dubai for financial talent, these are the jobs that matter.
