Nuvei, the Canadian payments technology company with significant Asia-Pacific operations based out of Singapore, has completed a live agentic commerce proof of concept with Visa that allowed a merchants AI agent to initiate and settle a purchase on behalf of a shopper without requiring the customer to leave the AI chat interface. The test, conducted with Visa, Arvato Systems, and fashion brand Kings and Priests, processed payments on live rails across multiple European issuers using tokenised credentials through Visa Intelligent Commerce.

The transaction operated within shopper-set controls including spending limits and approved purchase categories, demonstrating that agentic payments can be both autonomous and governed. The proof of concept involved issuing partners including Alpha Bank, Piraeus Bank, Bank Leumi, CAL, MAX, and Bank of Cyprus, with payments authorised and settled on live rails. Nuvei Chair and CEO Phil Fayer described agentic commerce as the next evolution of digital commerce, with AI not just finding products but initiating purchases on behalf of consumers.

Nuvei is now building a protocol compatibility layer that will allow merchants to connect once and accept payments from multiple agent standards including ACP, AP2, and MCP. The company also plans to introduce Know Your Agent features that register and credential AI agents, validate consumer mandates, assess agent risk, and maintain auditable records of agent-initiated transactions. Initial availability is targeted for the second half of 2026, including protocol compatibility, agent risk scoring, network certifications, and a developer sandbox.

The test arrives as Singapores financial regulator, MAS, actively develops governance frameworks for agentic finance through its new SAFR framework. The convergence of live agentic payments infrastructure and regulatory guardrails positions Singapore as a testbed for this emerging payments category. Nuveis Singapore engineering team is expected to play a role in rolling out the protocol compatibility layer across Asia-Pacific markets where agentic commerce is gaining regulatory attention.

Why it matters for Singapore: Agentic payments where AI agents transact on behalf of humans represent the next frontier of digital commerce, and Singapore is positioning itself at the centre of both the technology and its regulation. With MAS actively developing agentic AI governance frameworks and Nuvei a major global payments player with Singapore operations driving live implementations, Singapores fintech ecosystem gains first-mover exposure to a payments model that could fundamentally reshape how online purchases are initiated and authorised.
