The facility, named STT Seoul 1, delivers up to 30 megawatts of IT capacity and is purpose-built for hyperscale cloud computing and AI workloads, targeting South Korea's rapidly growing data centre market projected to reach 20 trillion won (S$17 billion) by 2030.
Located in Geumcheon-gu, southwestern Seoul, the data centre is one of the few large-scale AI facilities positioned inside the capital region, where power availability for high-density computing is increasingly constrained. Most competitors are building outside Seoul, giving STT Seoul 1 a strategic latency advantage for financial institutions and AI companies that need proximity to Gangnam and Yeouido business districts. The joint venture, established in 2021, brings together Hyosung Heavy Industries' power infrastructure expertise, Hyosung ITX's cloud and digital capabilities, and STT GDC's global operating experience spanning over 100 data centres across 12 countries.
The opening ceremony was attended by Singapore Ambassador to Korea Wong Ka-Jiun alongside Hyosung chairman Cho Hyun-joon and STT GDC CEO Bruno Lopez, underscoring the bilateral significance of the partnership. Chairman Cho has been driving this AI infrastructure pivot since 2017, when he established a dedicated task force, and his global networking push has included meetings with Oracle CEO Safra Catz and US Energy Secretary Chris Wright.
